Breast Care Q & A

What is breast care?

Breast care is a key part of gynecological care and can help enhance a woman’s overall wellness. Breast care is centered around lowering your risks of disease, protecting your breast health, educating about breast health, and general preventive care.

Breast care includes your own breast exams at home and a variety of tests or services often performed as part of your annual well-woman checkup.

Clinical breast exams

During your clinical breast exam, Dr. Jones carefully feels your underarm, breasts, and the area just below your breast bone to assess any changes, lumps, or other abnormalities. The exam will evaluate you for skin changes, nipple changes, and changes in your lymph nodes.

MyRisk® genetic screening

Dr. Jones offers myRisk genetic screening to analyze various genes and certain risks, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer risk. The myRisk Hereditary Cancer Test is a 29-gene panel designed to identify an elevated risk for eight cancers, and is constantly being expanded as technology and knowledge grow.

Breast biopsy

Dr. Jones offers breast biopsies when necessary. A breast biopsy is a procedure to remove a small sample of breast tissue for testing to determine if a suspicious area of your breast is cancerous.

Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds are available when needed as a safe and noninvasive test that produces detailed pictures of your breasts using high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound images are captured in real-time and can reveal the structure and movements of your blood flow and internal organs. Ultrasound technology is used in breast care to diagnose breast abnormalities and lumps.

What is a mammogram?

Mammogram technology allows Dr. Jones to detect cancer and abnormalities of the breast tissues. A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breasts that helps detect breast cancer early when it’s more treatable.

During your mammogram, you stand in front of a special X-ray machine and a technologist places your breast on a clear plastic plate. Another plate firmly but gently presses your breast from above. You feel some pressure as the plates compress your breast while the X-ray is taken. These steps are repeated to create a side view of your breast. Each breast is scanned separately.

Why would I need a mammogram?

Mammograms are a preventive care method used to detect abnormalities of the breast tissue and breast cancer. Dr. Jones advises you on the appropriate recommended screenings for you based on your medical history, age, and health.

If you have a higher risk for breast cancer and a family history, or if you have certain underlying medical conditions, more frequent screenings might be recommended. Dr. Jones devises a preventive care plan that enables you to be proactive about your breast health.
