Da Vinci Robot Q & A

What is da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery?

Dr. Jones uses the da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgical system to perform a range of minimally invasive surgeries for women. The da Vinci system allows surgeons to perform surgeries with heightened accuracy using the latest in robotics technology.

Using the da Vinci system, Dr. Jones performs such procedures as:

  • Myomectomy: removal of fibroids
  • Ovarian removal/ Ovarian cyst removal
  • Removal of scar tissue (also known as pelvic or abdominal adhesions)
  • Endometriosis procedure: the removal of endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus
  • Hysterectomy: removal of the uterus (hysterectomies are performed vaginally, laparoscopically, or with the da Vinci)

Dr. Jones also investigates pelvic pain, helps to treat dyspareunia (painful intercourse), and more with the da Vinci system.

How does the da Vinci robotic system work?

During a procedure with the da Vinci system, Dr. Jones operates the robotic arms of the da Vinci. The robotic arms have tiny cameras and surgical tools attached that transmit video to a high-definition monitor. Dr. Jones performs the surgery through a few small incisions while viewing the monitor.

The tiny wrists of the da Vinci instruments rotate and bend better than the human hand, with optimal precision and control.

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is performed to remove some or all of the female reproductive organs. There are two types of hysterectomy. With a partial hysterectomy, Dr. Jones removes the uterus. With a total hysterectomy, he removes the uterus, cervix, and, in some cases, your ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Dr. Jones may suggest a hysterectomy to treat:

  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Cancer of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, or endometrium

Dr. Jones performs many minimally invasive hysterectomies using the da Vinci robotic system.

Who is a good candidate for da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery?

Dr. Jones needs to clear you for the procedure after an evaluation to consider you as a suitable candidate for da Vinci surgery.

The da Vinci system is effective for most gynecologic surgeries but, in some cases, an alternative option might be necessary. For example, when an enlarged fibroid fills the entire pelvic cavity and blocks the view of the camera.

What are the benefits of robotic surgery?

The da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system provides a number of benefits over more invasive surgical options, including:

  • Minimal scarring
  • Smaller incisions
  • Usually performed as an outpatient avoiding hospital stays
  • Faster recovery time (many return to work within only a week or so)
  • Lower rate of pain and complications
